Description
This is the cobblestone remains of Via Appia Antica in Rome Italy. Via Appia Antica translates into Ancient Appian Way in English.
During the Ancient Republic, the Appian Way was one of the most important roads going in and out of Rome. It was also one of the first long roads built for the ancient republic army. The old expression - "All roads lead to Rome" heralds back to the time it was built, starting in Rome, and led off to other destinations. At the time, no matter where a person was, their road connected to the Appian Way which took them to Rome.
It was thrilling for me when a friend offered to take me the Via Appia Antica while I was visiting Rome . . . I had wanted to stand on the very same cobblestones that ancient Romans once walked upon for as long as I could remember.
Although we walked the path, it was great to see other walkers and bicyclists along the way . . . It's interesting to note that the road is well guarded and the only people who are allowed to drive on the Appian Way are those who live off of it. My friend told me they are mostly affluent folks or dignitaries and the like. He also said many families live there as the land was passed down to them from previous generations of Romans.
