During the Ancient Republic, the Appian Way was one of the most important roads going in and out of Rome. It was also one of the first long roads built for the ancient republic army. The old expression - "All roads lead to Rome" heralds back to the time it was built, starting in Rome, and led off to other destinations. At the time, no matter where a person was, their road connected to the Appian Way which took them to Rome.
It was thrilling for me when a friend offered to take me the Via Appia Antica while I was visiting Rome . . . I had wanted to stand on the very same cobblestones that ancient Romans once walked upon for as long as I could remember.
Although we walked the path, it was great to see other walkers and bicyclists along the way . . . It's interesting to note that the road is well guarded and the only people who...
